Our first Kenyan of the season, from the Muthutuini wash station located in Nyeri, Central Kenya, one of the most elevated in the area. The name itself means “a place with many ants”—the area is infamous for the ants that destroyed almost everything including the plantation of sugarcanes build by early Colonialists—very long ant hills are still visible from a far distance.
Members of the Ruthaka Farmers Cooperative Society run the wash station, the Co-op made up mainly of smallholder farms, some with as little as 50-100 trees. At the foot of Mt. Kenya, coffee trees in this area grow in the rich, red volcanic soil, creating coffees with intense and complex cup profiles, full of flavour. This Kenyan is a great example of that complexity, bursting with flavours of fresh raspberry and dried fig.
