Bukeye Hills is an agricultural microregion encapsulating a number of townlets (called ‘Hills’) in the Muramvya Province of Burundi. Bukeye Hills Washing Station was built in 2013 and quickly became the axis point for the microregions fast improvements and innovations in coffee farming, employing agronomists and starting myriad ongoing programs and campaigns related to pesticide use, pruning, mulching, fertilizing practice and much more. In just over one short decade the washing station has grown to now employ 113 people, most of whom were born and raised in Bukeye Hills and live there still.

This coffee is a traditional Burundi style fully washed process. Day lots are delivered by farmers to the washing station where they are floated and sorted by hand for ripeness, then pulped and fermented once. Cherries may undergo an additional stage of agitation if needed to loosen parchment from coffee seed, a traditional method where around 25 people stamp by foot on the slimy fermented coffee cherry mucilage. Next, fresh water from Bukeye Washing Stations granite filtered bore well rinses the remaining mucilage, before beans are graded by density and soaked for a final 4-6 hours.
