Gakuyuini - Washed
Thirikwa FCS in Kirinyaga, central Kenya, is run by 5 elected board members representing 670+ smallholder farmer members. Like most in Kenya, these farmers are on small plots of land, usually less than 1 hectare, farming around 250 trees intercropped with other fruits or vegetable crops. Many farmers choose corn, legumes or tea to grow alongside coffee to create additional income between harvesting seasons.
Farmers deliver fresh harvested cherry to Gakuyuini on the same day it is picked, there it is sorted and then pulped and fermented for 12-16 hours, and washed using fresh river water, before drying on raised beds, where it will be sorted again and regularly turned for even drying, which takes around two weeks.
This cup has classic Kenyan flavours and a clean, tea-like body, with notes of persimmon and blackberry, darjeeling tea, and crisp lemon acidity.
