Firestone is the stuff of legends. ST ALi has been buying the coffee of renowned Auromar Farm in Panama since 2014, and when it comes to their “Firestone” Gesha, IFYKYK: it's on another planet.
Auromar Farm, owned and operated by Roberto Brenes, has accumulated a cult-like following of coffee geeks (ie. us) worldwide who whisper the name, “Firestone”, in reverential tones - and for very good reason. In years past this category-defining gesha has made history at the prestigious Best of Panama auction, where it has achieved not only the top prize in the washed process category, but also the highest score ever to be given by international judges in this competition- with an unheard of score of 96.
Auromar was also the 2013 and 2016 Best of Panama winner and places in the top 20 of this fierce competition every year. Perhaps unsurprising given that owner Roberto, when not farming coffee, is a triathlete, ironman, investment banker and CEO of the Panama Stock Exchange. I guess everyone needs a hobby.
Located in the highlands of Panama, less than half of the 30 hectare Auromar estate is dedicated to farming with the rest reserved for pristine tropical forest. The forest and its diverse wildlife help keep soils in the area healthy and rich. Throughout the working farm huge trees dot the field, their canopies providing shade and protection for the sensitive gesha trees below.
Think about the best traditional gesha you have ever had and multiply by 10. Firestone is subtle and delicate yet complex and unforgettable. The 2024 lot has notes of peach, lavender, honey and crisp prosecco, evoking white peach bellinis on a summer day, with lavender perfume in the air.
