A rare estate-grown coffee from a country that is almost exclusively smallholder farms comes from Kamavindi Estate, a third-generation coffee farm established in 1958 on the slopes of Mount Kenya.
Husband and wife John Mbature and Anna Rwamba founded Kamavindi with only 100 coffee trees, the limit imposed on native farmers before Kenya’s colonial independence. After independence, their son Martin Ireri Mbature and his wife Hellen took over operations, expanding the young estate to 7000 trees, the beginnings of a formidable legacy to pass on to the next generation. Kamavindi’s current owner and operator, Peter Mbature, has not only carried the Kamavindi torch but also works tirelessly to educate farmers from the surrounding area, helping them to improve cultivation and processing methods and access new markets.
This delicate cup tastes like champagne, soft white florals and ripe blackberries - we adore it.
